We’re hiring — Data Scientist (Natural Language Processing), Kenya

summary

Pollicy is looking for a talented and experienced Natural Language Processing (NLP) consultant to support the team temporarily (6 to 8 weeks between December to January) in building machine learning solutions. You will work closely with Pollicy’s in-house Data Scientist to develop and deploy a machine learning model for one of their projects and as such prior experience building and deploying models is a MUST.

Tasks will include:

  1. Building, deploying and maintaining data pipelines and machine learning models.
  2. Contributing to the dataset creation by supplementing the already available data with that data that may be relevant to the machine learning activity. 
  3. Actively participating in the data preparation process/text preprocessing which involves areas of n-Gram identification, tokenization, stopwords removal, named entity removal, etc.
  4. Contributing to data analysis to extract insights from textual data. 
  5. Other duties as assigned.

Deliverables:

  1. The reproducible script allows someone else to recreate your work by copying and pasting code. Include the required packages, data, code, and a description of your environment.
  2. Model performance screenshot – A screenshot of the model evaluation results.
  3. Document term matrix – a mathematical matrix that describes the frequency of terms that occur in a collection of documents.
  4. Note on sentiment analysis – a short writeup on the model.

Who should apply?

We are looking for mid-career professionals interested in working on multi-national research projects tied to civic technology issues pertinent to sub-Saharan Africa specifically in East Africa.

You must have:

  1. At least an undergraduate degree
  2. At least 3 years experience with machine learning/deep learning (Preferably experience building machine learning for Natural Language processing).
  3. Experience working with both Python and R to build and deploy models.
  4. An open mind and desire to try out new things
  5. Willingness to teach and share knowledge with others.
  6. Competency in Microsoft and Google applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  7. Possess strong writing and communication skills
