The Waitlist: Before We Can Organise, We Have to Be Safe

summary

We have spent years documenting the experiences of African women in online spaces, from everyday women in the markets to human right defenders to political leaders. We have documented the harassment campaigns, the coordinated disinformation and ultimately, the silencing and censorship. We have published the data around the continent, advocated for safer and joyful internet spaces with technology companies and are actively working with legislative systems. We have also been targets ourselves. So, when we opened a call for African feminist and women’s rights organisations to join our digital safety audit and training initiative, we expected interest. We did not expect what came back.
