Authors
summary

The rapid expansion of digital technologies, particularly generative AI is reshaping communication during civic and electoral periods across the African continent. While AI offers opportunities for innovation and wider communication, it has also facilitated the creation and dissemination of deepfakes defined as synthetic videos, audio recordings and images that convincingly impersonate real people. This article examines how deepfakes are increasingly used as tools for disseminating gendered disinformation targeting women in politics drawing on monitoring and analysis from Uganda, Tanzania, Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire.
