Communications and Advocacy Lead

We are currently looking for a Communications Manager to support our communications activities in Sub-Saharan Africa. This position will be based in our Kampala office but can also be remote. The ideal candidate will have strong existing relationships with both East African and international media, as well as the ability to develop and execute strategic public relations plans that leverage our research and data products, partners, and target audience focused stories and initiatives. At the same time, this person recognises that internal communications are just as important as external communications because our workforce is an important audience that we need to inspire and motivate through our storytelling.

The ideal candidate will be a strong storyteller who can create and implement public relations campaigns emphasising the unique role POLLICY’s work plays in people’s digital lives, as well as the advocacy improvements the organisation works on.

Areas of Responsibility Key Activities
Strategic Communications
  • Lead the planning and implementation of Pollicy’s communications, media and digital media strategies, focusing on advocacy contributing to our Strategic Plan
  • Together with the Programs and Research team, lead, develop and drive communication and media strategies for various projects, events, launches, to achieve our advocacy objectives
  • Participate in talks, media appearances, conferences, partnership dialogues, government meetings etc. to advance our research and program goals
Editorial and Media
  • Editorial support for Pollicy’s research and programs linked to clear advocacy goals 
  • Collaborate with program and research teams, key stakeholders such as relevant government departments, and officials to identify or design advocacy materials and effectively disseminate them through Pollicy online platforms such as the website and other channels such as mainstream media
  • Assist with and coordinate editorial and production for communications initiatives, outreach, and products, including writing, copyediting, formatting, proofreading, and basic design review.
  • Develop and maintain targeted press lists designed to maximize influence and advocacy and identify opportunities to engage media in a proactive manner
Events and Admin
  • Support with the coordination of online and physical events along with the Admin team and any other consultants or service providers
  • Maintain calendars to monitor department-coordinated media appearances, conference attendance, and events
  • Coordination of conference registrations and exhibit logistics; coordination of publishing and exhibition materials distribution at conferences and events, including maintaining/tracking stock of materials and promotional items, including during online engagements
Capacity Strengthening
  • Build cross-organizational capacity around communications for advocacy by strengthen social media capacity of staff and the alliance by developing and implementing tutorials and tools on social media for advocacy

Compensation (Gross Pay): between UGX 5,000,000 – UGX 7,500,000 per month (approximately $1,500 – 2,000 per month)
